There’s no one-size-fits-all path into the green trades. Whether you choose to go through a union apprenticeship or a non-union training program, both offer valuable skills, real-world experience, and opportunities to grow a long-term career. The key is finding the right fit for your goals, lifestyle, and learning style.
Here are a few differences between union and non-union pathways. Click on the examples to learn more about the opportunities:
Union Training
- Highly structured, earn-as-you-learn model
- Access to long-term benefits (healthcare, retirement, etc.)
- Starts with applying to an apprenticeship and joining the union
- Example: IBEW, LIUNA
Non-Union and Community Training
- More flexible and accessible for some
- Can offer quicker entry into the field
- Includes community colleges, pre-apprenticeship programs, and employer-based models
- Example: IECRM
