Union and Non-Union Pathways to the Green Trades

There’s no one-size-fits-all path into the green trades. Whether you choose to go through a union apprenticeship or a non-union training program, both offer valuable skills, real-world experience, and opportunities to grow a long-term career. The key is finding the right fit for your goals, lifestyle, and learning style.

Here are a few differences between union and non-union pathways. Click on the examples to learn more about the opportunities:

Union Training

  • Highly structured, earn-as-you-learn model
  • Access to long-term benefits (healthcare, retirement, etc.)
  • Starts with applying to an apprenticeship and joining the union
  • Example: IBEW, LIUNA

Non-Union and Community Training

  • More flexible and accessible for some
  • Can offer quicker entry into the field
  • Includes community colleges, pre-apprenticeship programs, and employer-based models
  • Example: IECRM
