If you’re looking to break into the facilities management field with a focus on sustainability, there are several exciting training opportunities that can help you launch or grow your career. From entry-level programs to nationally recognized sustainability credentials, here’s a look at three key pathways—each of which can stand alone or be stacked to create a well-rounded foundation in sustainable facilities work.
1. Facilities Management Pre-Apprenticeship (Front Range, CO)
This entry-level program is offered through a partnership with IFMA (International Facilities Management Association) and Goodwill Colorado. It introduces key concepts in facility management, including sustainability, and focuses on workplace readiness and safety—exactly what you’d expect from a high-quality pre-apprenticeship.

It’s nationally recognized and brings credibility and deeper knowledge to those working in energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmentally responsible maintenance.

3. Green Janitor Education Program (GJEP)
Don’t let the name fool you—this is far more than a janitorial program. Originally launched in New York City (where participants are often called “Green Supers”), the Green Janitor Education Program is a 30-hour sustainability-focused training for frontline building staff. It’s designed to teach building performance, energy efficiency, green cleaning, and water conservation.
The program has expanded to Los Angeles and now has a training provider in Colorado.
